If you’ve ever Googled how to improve ADHD focus, you’ve probably stumbled into the world of ADHD focus hacks. Nootropics, blue light blockers, cold plunges, dopamine fasting. Apparently, all it takes to unlock superhuman focus is a meticulously optimised routine, a supplement stack that costs more than rent, and the patience to stick electrodes on your forehead.

So, I did what any responsible adult would do. I tried every ADHD focus hack I could find. And after weeks of experimenting, tracking, and spending way too much money, I can confidently say that only two things actually worked. Caffeine and guilt.

1. Dopamine Fasting

Ah yes, the idea that if you deprive yourself of all fun, your brain will suddenly start producing dopamine on demand. The concept. No phone, no social media, no music, no talking. Just raw, unfiltered existence until your dopamine resets.

In reality, I spent the day staring at a wall, questioning my life choices. Then I watched an entire Netflix series (in one sitting) out of sheer misery. Net focus gained? Zero.

2. Cold Showers for Focus

People swear by this one. Cold exposure activates your nervous system. Increases dopamine. Makes you invincible.

Here’s what happened when I tried it.

  • I screamed.
  • My body entered survival mode.
  • I did not, under any circumstances, feel ready to focus.

I just felt like I was being slowly murdered by water.

Did I sleep better? Yes. Did I look like a failed cyberpunk cosplayer every evening? Also yes. They worked, but I felt ridiculous wearing them.

2. Omega-3 Supplements

There’s actual science behind this one. It’s good for your brain, and after a few weeks, I did feel slightly more functional. The downside of omega-3‘s? It made me smell like I was marinating in fish oil.

3. Intermittent Fasting

Weirdly effective. If I skipped breakfast, I actually felt sharper and more focused. But the catch? I was also one inconvenient interaction away from committing a crime. If you can handle being mildly hangry all day, this one is worth a shot.

The Only ADHD Focus Hacks That Actually Worked

After weeks of trial and error, here’s what I learned. The only two things that guaranteed focus were.

1. Caffeine

Coffee. Matcha. Yerba mate. Whatever your poison is. Caffeine works because caffeine works.

The trick is timing it right. Drink it too early, and you burn out by noon. Too late, and you will be awake at 2 AM making life plans you will never follow through on. But when timed correctly, caffeine turns ADHD brain fog into laser focus.

2. Guilt

The greatest productivity tool of all time. Nothing fuels ADHD hyperfocus quite like looming deadlines, crushing expectations, and the raw terror of disappointing people.

Forget fancy supplements. Panic is the best stimulant on the market.

The Verdict

ADHD focus hacks are fun. Some of them even work. But at the end of the day, you don’t need a £500 brain zapper to be productive. Sometimes, all it takes is a strong cup of coffee and the fear of letting everyone down.
